Those that are huge fans of British television and film will be familiar with Birmingham, as it is a city that is often used for filming some of the most popular shows and flicks that we can see on television or in the cinemas. The city has had more success than most when it comes to filming, but what are some of the most popular titles that have been filmed in the Second City?
Line of Duty
One of the biggest British dramas in recent years was filmed in Birmingham. The show’s first season was filmed in its entirety in the Second City, with the Queen’s Arms used for pub filming.
However, following the first season, Line of Duty relocated to Northern Ireland, where the previous five seasons have been filmed. Regardless, the show still looks as though it is set in Birmingham, with maps of the second city used, as well as the famous ‘0121’ area code for the second city are prominent throughout.
Another of the famous BBC dramas that has called Birmingham home is Peaky Blinders. It isn’t that surprising that a number of the scenes in the hit drama were filmed in Birmingham, as the drama focuses on a gang from the Second City. One of the most prominent spots that have been used for filming throughout its history is at the Black Country Living Museum.
Show creator Steven Knight has admitted that the location is the home to the show, and it has quickly became a tourist hotspot for fans of Peaky Blinders. The shows extended success looks set to continue when the latest season airs early in 2022, and fans have already began speculating what could happen in the upcoming series on WeLoveBrum.
Ready Player One
It isn’t just television dramas that have been filmed in Birmingham, as the hugely successful Ready Player One also used the Second City as its filming location. The film was produced by Steven Spielberg, and starred Olivia Cooke, T.J. Miller and Simon Pegg. It was a hugely commercially successful film, with Ready Player One grossing over $580 million. It also received a number of nominations, including Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards and British Academy Film Award.
The majority of filming took place in Birmingham, as the city replaced Columbus as the shooting location. There were a number of areas around the city used for filming, including Ludgate Hill Car Park and Livery Street in the Jewellery Quarter.
Mission: Impossible 7
One of the biggest movie franchises in history was also recorded in Birmingham over the summer, as Tom Cruise was pictured in the Second City. Filming of the seventh Mission: Impossible filming took place in Grand Central, with the top floor of the train station off limits throughout the duration of filming.
Fans will still need to wait a while to see the latest release, as it is not set to come out until September next year, but will star Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson alongside Cruise.
