Chef is a 2014 American comedy-drama which was written, produced, directed by and starring Jon Favreau. It follows Carl Casper (Favreau), a professional chef who, after a public row with a food critic, quits his job at a Los Angeles restaurant and returns to his home town of Miami to fix up a food truck, his long time wish.
The only food Carl, his friend and Carl’s son serve in El Jefe food truck is a Cubano sandwich.

The recipe was provided by Roy Choi, the co-producer of the movie and a real life chef. Choi is also the founder of Kogi BBQ fleet of Korean taco trucks and owner of several L.A. restaurants.
How to make Cubanos
This is the recipe for 6 people. You’ll need
- 6 thin slices baked ham
- 12 large, thin slices Roy Choi’s Mojo Pork or other cooked roast pork
- Melted butter, for brushing
- Two large white baguettes, each cut in 3 pieces (about 6 inch/15 cm), split lengthwise
- Yellow mustard, for brushing
- 6 thin slices Swiss cheese
- 12 long thin slices dill pickles
Step by step guide
Put bread, ham and pork on a plate and cook until warmed and browned in spots. Transfer to plate.
Layer bottom of buns with pork and ham.
Add two slices of Swiss cheese and add two pickles.
Brush inside of bun tops with mustard and close sandwiches.
Generously butter outside of sandwiches and add butter to press. Place sandwich on press.
Cook until cheese melts and outsides are browned and crispy (app. 3 minutes).
Cut in two or three pieces.
